The moon is a powerful tool to use in Witchcraft or magick.
Each phase of the moon has its own power and the moon has long been associated with mystery and magic.
If we perform our spells and rituals to concur with the phases of the moon, our magic will be stronger. While timing magic with the phases of the moon isn’t necessary for spells to work, it certainly helps.
Magic is generally performed to concur with either the waxing, waning, new or full moon cycles of the moon.
This appearance of a growing moon is actually caused by the position of the moon relative to that of the sun and the earth. The entire cycle lasts approximately 29 days and there are usually 13 of these cycles every year.

Moon Phases and what magic is best used
Full Moon:
The full moon forms a perfect silvery sphere in the sky.
The power of the full moon lasts 3 days before and 3 days after the full moon.
The power is the strongest at the point of the full moon. All works of magic are best performed on a full moon, as it is the most powerful of moon phases.
The full moon can be used to cleanse items, renew their uses and empower your ritual items.
You can leave them under the moonlight over the 3 days of the full moon instill them with her power and blessings. You can also make holy water during a full moon and save it for use in rituals throughout the rest of the month.
This is a time for spells that transform, increase psychic ability, for fertility spells and invocation to lunar goddess. This a time of strength, love and power.
At this time the moon represents the Goddess in her Mother aspect.
Dark Moon:
The dark moon is where there is no moon visible in the sky.
At this time the moon represents the Goddess in her Crone aspect.
Some people say this is a time for no magic to be performed; others say that magic can be performed.
Whether you perform magic on a Dark Moon is up to you, do whatever feels right to you.
New Moon:
This is the first sighting of the moon, 3 days after the Dark Moon.
At this time the moon represents the Goddess in her Maiden aspect.
This is a time for spells of new beginnings, for healing, for beauty, self-improvement, job hunting, love and romance.
Waxing Moon:
The waxing moon is getting larger in the sky, moving from the new moon towards the full moon.
The waxing moon is a time for spells that attract, that bring positive change, spells for love, good luck, and growth. This a time for workings to bring things to you, such as wealth, healing and stability.
This a time for new beginnings, to conceptualize ideas, to invoke.
At this time the moon represents the Goddess in her Maiden aspect.
This period of the waxing moon lasts about 14 days
Waning Moon:
The waning moon is decreasing in size, moving from the full moon towards the new moon.
This is a time for spells that banish, release, and reverse.
This phase has a banishing effect, so this is the best time for magic to remove things you do not want or need in your life. This phase is best for reversing spells, banishing negative thoughts, letting go of the past, guilt, weight loss, releasing anger and things like this.
This is a time to break bad habits or addictions, to end bad relationships.
This is a time of deep intuition and a time for divination.
At this time the moon represents the Goddess in her Crone aspect.
The Waning moon period last about 14 days.
As the moon travels on a never ending course, the moon also travels through the different astrological signs. When the moon resides within the various signs, the sign influences the magic aspects of the moon.

There fore performing spells of the elements need to be done when the moon is in one of the astrological signs governed by that element.
Earth spells need to be done when the moon is in the signs of Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn.
Air spells need to be done when the moon is in the signs of Gemini, Libra, or Aquarius
Fire spells need to be done when the moon is in the signs of Aries, Leo or Sagittarius
Water spells need to be done when the moon is in the signs of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces.
Importance of Wording of spells with moon magic
Spells can be performed during different phases of the moon depending on the wording and intention. A healing spell could be worded as a desire for increased health which would be performed during a waxing moon phase or on the full moon. A desire can also be stated for the illness to diminish. In that case, the spell would be performed during the waning moon phase.
Therefore you must be careful of what wording you use in which moon phases otherwise you may have a reverse effect of the spell you wish to perform….
